TORONTO (AP) — Stompin' Tom Connors' "The Hockey Song" is going into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.
The catchy ditty celebrating "the good ol' hockey game" will be honored Saturday night when the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Winnipeg Jets at Scotiabank Arena. During the ceremony, the late singer's son, Tom Connors Jr., will be presented with a hall of fame plaque, and country singer Tim Hicks will perform the song.
The 1973 novelty track spent decades as a cult favorite before the Ottawa Senators began playing it early 1990s. That caught the attention of Maple Leafs coach Pat Burns, who called for the song to be played at his team's games as well.
After Connors' died in 2013, the single shot up the charts, eventually peaking at No. 29 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100.
