SALT LAKE CITY — Delays are expected to continue throughout the day Thursday after sparks and an explosion on a TRAX train overnight shut down the lines in downtown Salt Lake City, officials said.
A catenary wire that carries power and runs above the train fell onto the rail car late Tuesday, causing the sparks and explosion, Utah Transit Authority officials said.
UTA officials were estimating the delays for repairs would continue all day Thursday, according to UTA spokesman Carl Arky. The regular TRAX service schedule is expected to resume Friday morning.
Thirty people were on the train at the time of the incident. One person suffered a wrist injury and was transported to a local hospital, officials said.
The cause of the power surge remained undetermined as of Wednesday evening, Arky said.
Southbound lanes of Main Street between 300 South and 400 South were closed as crews repaired the line, but the road had reopened by Wednesday afternoon.
FrontRunner is also delayed because of track-related issues caused by inclement weather, according to UTA.
Bus bridges will remain in effect along affected TRAX lines, UTA officials said.
