WEST VALLEY — One person is in critical condition and seven others are injured after what police believe was a drunk driving crash in West Valley early Sunday morning, officials said.

Officers responded to reports of the crash at approximately 4300 South and 5600 West about 1:30 a.m.

A vehicle traveling east near 4300 South attempted to make a right-hand turn onto 5600 West and failed to yield to a vehicle traveling south on 5600 West, according to West Valley City Police Lt. Amy Maurer.

Both cars had four people in them, Maurer said. Seven of the eight involved in the crash were transported to the hospital with injuries, and one was in critical condition with a possible skull fracture. The eighth person was released at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle that tried to turn right was a 27-year-old woman, and may be arrested on suspicion of a DUI once she is released from the hospital, Maurer said.

If she is arrested, police will push for this to be charged as a felony offense DUI because of the number and type of injuries caused by the accident, Maurer said.
