SALT LAKE CITY — Police have cleared the scene near 600 N. 5600 West after receiving a false report of an active shooter, officials said Friday.

Police initially responded to the address after receiving a 911 text reporting an active shooter, according to Salt Lake police detective Keith Horrocks. The text came in about 2:46 p.m., he said.

When they responded to the address, they did not find a shooter, Horrocks said. Staff members at the building were not aware of any shots fired, he added.

The building at that address was still cleared as a precaution, Horrocks said. Everything was back to normal at the scene as of 4 p.m. and there were no traffic delays in the area, he said.

The incident apparently was an accident, according to Salt Lake police detective Greg Wilking. An active shooter alarm at a business in the area was triggered in error, he said.

"We actually located the individual that accidentally activated that alarm system, spoke with them, and everything is just an accident at this point and fortunately everything is alright," he said.
