SPANISH FORK — Police said they may never know why a man drove his vehicle across a highway center line and collided with a pickup truck about to make a left-hand turn Friday morning.

Luke Allen Hansen, 18, was taken to Utah Valley Hospital in extremely critical condition after the crash, but died from his injuries. He had recently moved from Weiser, Idaho, for work and lived with a sister in Spanish Fork at the time of his death, according to Spanish Fork Police Lt. Brandon Anderson.

Hansen was traveling northwest on U.S. Highway 6 in a green Saturn passenger car when he collided with a GMC pickup truck in a southeast bound lane waiting to turn left onto Expressway Lane about 8:45 a.m. The 71-year-old man driving the pickup truck suffered injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening, and is expected to recover, Anderson said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Investigators believe Hansen may have run a red light based on witness statements collected at the scene. Neither impairment nor distraction were believed to be factors in the crash, Anderson said.

“We may never know what made him leave his lane,” he said.

Hansen was wearing a seat belt, according to Anderson.
