SALT LAKE CITY — Tuesday marks the 171st anniversary of Mormon pioneers reaching the Salt Lake Valley for the first time and there are plenty of celebrations across the state to celebrate.
In Salt Lake, that includes the annual Days of ‘47 Parade and Deseret News Marathon. It also means some road closures in the city Tuesday morning.
Motorists should expect 200 East from South Temple to 900 South to be closed most of Tuesday morning while marathon runners and parade floats roll through. However, some other roads will also have lengthy or periodic closures throughout the morning.
The streets that each route runs through will be closed Tuesday morning, as well as the intersections that cross the routes. However, some of the intersections on the marathon route will open for traffic to cross through when possible.
The marathon begins at the top of Big Mountain north of Emigration Canyon at 5:30 a.m. and the route runs through the canyon from there. The race route then moves west on Sunnyside Avenue before it goes northwest on Foothill Drive. It then bends north on 1300 East before going west again on South Temple.
The route then turns south at 200 East and goes east at 900 South, where it ends at Liberty Park at 600 East.
The parade will start at South Temple and State Street at 9 a.m. The parade route goes east one block before it goes south on 200 East through 900 South. It then moves east on 900 South until it ends at Liberty Park at 900 S. 600 East.

The route roads and crossing intersections will reopen after the parade and marathon are over.
Of course, there are many more Pioneer Day events happening throughout Utah, some of which can be found here. And here’s a list where people can watch Pioneer Day fireworks.
