SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Police in Maine say a man and a woman who tried to skip out on their bill at a restaurant threatened staff with a box cutter and hatchet when confronted for not paying.

Police arrested the couple following the attempted "dine and dash" at Imperial China restaurant in South Portland on Saturday night. The Portland Press Herald reports they threatened the staff during a confrontation over the $40 bill.

Customers from a nearby business intervened, disarming the two. The couple was taken into custody jailed Monday night. They were charged with robbery, aggravated assault, criminal threatening and refusing to submit to arrest.

It wasn't immediately known if they had lawyers.

A third member of the group was issued a summons.
