SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Vicky Chavez and her two young daughters have spent six months inside a Utah church, where they practice piano in the chapel, run across wooden floors and learn from church members. But they never step outside. The Honduran family has taken sanctuary in the First Unitarian Church in Salt Lake City after repeatedly being denied asylum in the United States. Chavez says she's asking for relief from a federal appeals court. Immigration authorities say Chavez exhausted her appeals and is a fugitive.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City councilman Derek Kitchen has been declared the winner of his Democratic primary race for a Utah Senate seat representing one of the state's rare left-leaning districts. The Salt Lake County Clerk released final results Tuesday showing 29-year-old Kitchen won the race by 5 percentage points over physician Jennifer Plumb. Kitchen had led in the returns since the June 26 primary but Plumb had refused to concede until the final vote tally was released.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — At least 74 homes have been destroyed and six more damaged in a Utah wildfire that forced more than 1,000 people from their homes. The Duchesne County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday the fire in a mountain area near a popular fishing reservoir also damaged or destroyed 131 camp trailers and 158 sheds or agricultural buildings. Cloudy conditions and light rain have helped firefighters halt the blaze in recent days. Officials say the 78-square-mile fire is 45 percent contained.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — New obstruction of justice charges are being filed against a Utah woman whose boyfriend is accused of killing two teenagers and abandoning their bodies in an abandoned mine shaft. Prosecutors filed 28 new charges against 34-year-old Morgan Henderson on Monday, one for each time she allegedly deceived police. She had previously been charged with two counts of obstruction of justice. She initially denied knowing about the deaths of 17-year-old Brelynne "Breezy" Otteson or 18-year-old Riley Powell.
