SANTAQUIN — A 17-year-old girl has died after a teenager ran a red light and crashed into her following a vehicle chase with authorities Saturday night, officials said.
Authorities identified the girl Sunday as Rita M. Dolph, 17, of Santaquin.
The 17-year-old boy allegedly was driving a truck that was reported stolen from Payson, Utah Highway Patrol officials said on the agency’s website.
Police officers in Salem had tried to stop the truck shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday, but the driver fled and police terminated the chase, according to UHP officials. A Utah County Sheriff’s Office deputy located and began chasing the truck as it got on I-15 southbound.
The driver then got off I-15 at Santaquin Main Street, exit 244. The truck then ran a red light at the off-ramp and crashed into Dolph's car heading east in the intersection.
Dolph was critically injured in the crash and flown to a local hospital in a medical helicopter. She later died from her injuries, officials said Sunday.
The 17-year-old driver of the truck also was taken to a hospital with injuries and later booked into Slate Canyon Youth Detention Center on suspicion of vehicle theft, failure to respond to the command of police, possession of stolen property and numerous traffic infractions, officials said.
Officials did not release the name of the teen driving the truck.
