BOUNTIFUL — A man shot and killed last week by a pawn shop clerk while trying to rob the store had an extensive criminal record and warrants out for his arrest, authorities said Thursday. A second robber remains at large.

Police said Kleydys Arbolaez-Hernandez, 40, of Denver, Colorado, was shot and killed during the attempted robbery.

The search for a second person connected with the attempted robbery was still underway Thursday. He is identified as Alexyanis Cutino Jimenez, 30, and has ties to Texas and Florida, Bountiful Police Lt. Dave Edwards said.

Jimenez is believed to be driving a white 2005 Saturn Vue with Colorado license plate BMT182. Police described him as 5 feet 6 inches and 140 pounds with brown eyes and black hair.

Both Arbolaez-Hernandez and Jimenez had been connected with robberies in Oklahoma and Texas, Edwards said. A warrant for Arbolaez-Hernandez’s arrest was issued in Oklahoma Friday — the same day he was shot and killed, Edwards said.

Jimenez has an active armed robbery warrant for his arrest in Oklahoma which was issued Wednesday, Edwards said. He added Jimenez is being sought nationwide.

Police were unsure whether Jimenez remained in Utah or fled the state after the robbery attempt.

“That’s anyone’s guess, but it certainly sounds likely since we know they’ve traveled, they’ve been doing robberies in at least two other states,” Edwards said.

The two entered Bountiful Pawn, 135 S. 500 West, about 10 a.m. Friday, according to Edwards. Arbolaez-Hernandez had a gun and Jimenez had a hammer, police said.

When Arbolaez-Hernandez entered the store, he pointed his handgun at a store clerk and ordered him to lay on the ground, while Jimenez moved to the merchandise area, police said.

During a moment where Arbolaez-Hernandez became distracted, the store clerk ran to a store room, drew a concealed weapon he was carrying and waited in a corner.

Arbolaez-Hernandez followed the clerk into the room and pointed a gun at him, and the clerk shot at Arbolaez-Hernandez, Edwards said. The two fought on the ground before Arbolaez-Hernandez succumbed to his injuries.

The clerk suffered minor injuries, including a cut to his head and a black eye, police said last week.

It is believed both Arbolaez-Hernandez and Jiminez left the Denver area on May 1 and traveled to Salt Lake City.

Anyone who may see Jimenez is encouraged to call 911 and should not approach him, police said.
