SALT LAKE CITY — In three years historic Trolley Square will get new retail shops, housing, and a hotel.
“It’s been a long time coming,” said Taymour Semnani, owner of the Trolley Square property since 2012.
The plans include adding a play area, open seating, apartment housing, a hotel, and a rock climbing facility called Momentum Climbing Gym.
Trolley Square opened in 1908 and is Utah’s only festival marketplace. The center is an historic landmark in Utah and popular tourist spot. But since the 2007 shooting in the square, business hasn’t been the same.
“I think that’s what caused the decline,” said Frank Peterson, a bookman at Wellers Book Works, located in the south end of the mall.
Peterson said he’s hoping by having more people living nearby it will bring more traffic to the area.
