ST. GEORGE — Officials believe a lightning strike started a fire that destroyed a house in St. George early Sunday morning.
The fire started about 4:41 a.m. Sunday near 2000 Rivers Edge Lane, St. George Fire Chief Robert Stoker said. The fire was fully involved by the time crews arrived.
A large storm passed through the St. George area overnight, and there was a lightning strike near the house during the storm, Stoker said. The structure patterns of the fire also led fire officials to believe the fire was caused by lightning, he said.
The fire started in the attic and then spread, which caused the room to collapse, Stoker said. The damage was estimated at about $350,000 and the fire was put out in about two hours, he said.
There were no people in the house at the time of the fire. The owners live in Holladay, Stoker said.
