SANFORD, N.C. (AP) — Police in North Carolina have shot and killed a suspect in the wounding of a teen.
News outlets reported Sanford officers were called to a home around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday and found 41-year-old Juan Carlos Romero with a handgun. Police said Romero shot at the three officers, and they returned fire, killing him.
A news release says officers determined Romero had shot and wounded a 19-year-old woman, who was in stable condition Wednesday at a hospital in Chapel Hill.
The names and races of the officers involved weren't immediately released. They've been placed on leave while the State Bureau of Investigation reviews the shooting.
A spokesman for the police department didn't immediately return messages Wednesday seeking more information.
Sanford is about 35 miles (55 kilometers) southwest of Raleigh.
