An on-the-scene look at Utah students participating in nationwide walkout

SALT LAKE CITY — Students and teachers walked out of classrooms across the state and country Wednesday on the one-month anniversary of the fatal Parkland, Florida, school shooting.

The national walkout began at 10 a.m. and lasted 17 minutes in honor of the 14 students and three faculty members killed in the Florida shooting on Feb. 14.

While many students participated, some did not.

KSL dispatched several reporters to high schools across the state to report on this unprecedented event. See how the walkouts unfolded below.

Walkout at Waterford

The Waterford School in Sandy was among the several dozen schools where a walkout occurred. Students who chose to participate left the school at 10 a.m. for 17 minutes to reflect on those who died in Parkland.

17 minutes of silence at Herriman High School

Conor Spahr, a senior at the Herriman High, helped organize a walkout at the school. Students walked to the school's football field and held a 17-minute moment of silence for the victims of the Parkland shooting. "Out here in Utah, there's not a lot of talk about any change or reform for gun violence," he told KSL TV, walking outside the high school with an orange T-shirt with "#enough" printed on it. "We're just starting to make awareness for it and get people to start contacting their legislators." He added he hopes that will lead to change in the future. One of his classmates, Stephanie, was standing next to him holding a sign that read "No more silence. End gun violence." "After this last shooting, our government — in Utah specifically — failed to introduce any bills, other than one that didn't pass," she said. "I think that's unacceptable. I think we need to do better for our future generations and for us."

Brighton High students walk out

Jackson Green, a freshman at Brighton High School, said he chose to walk out as a symbol that students want to help make a difference after recent shootings. The Brighton High students who chose to walk out were planning 17 minutes of silence for the victims of the Parkland shooting and 17 minutes to discuss gun violence. "Everyone wants to do this; everyone wants to help out," he said. "We just want to show what we can help with, anything we can do."

Alternative response

While many students will walk out Wednesday morning, two junior high schools in the Granite School District are using the walkout to talk about school safety. At 10 a.m., students and teachers at Kearns Junior High will walk out and observe a moment of silence for those killed in the shooting and other school violence. They will then return to class "and receive a card with 17 ways to show kindness to 17 people," according to district spokesman Ben Horsley. At Churchill Junior High in Holladay, parents were being invited to participate in the walkout with their children if they so choose. The walkout would include a moment of silence for those killed in the Parkland shooting, Horsley added.

Utah school plans for Wednesday

Backman Elementary: Will follow the same plan as the national walk out day - 17 minutes for 17 people killed in Parkland, Florida.

Bryant Middle School: While students are on the field, they will have an orange ribbon that can be tied to the fence closest to the school in honor of the Parkland victims. During lunchtime, activity students will write on an orange slip of paper to promote peace and love in school.

Dilworth Elementary School: Walk out starts at 10 a.m. and students will be walking around the block. Teachers will be discussing what kindness looks like at the school.

East High School: Students will walk out at approximately 10 a.m. and return to class at approximately 10:20 a.m.

Glendale Middle School: 17-minute walk out. Only certain classes will participate. These teachers have chosen to tie the walkout to their core curriculum by writing arguments and voicing their opinions to sway public opinion.

Hawthorne Elementary School: Students have two designated places to which they can go for the 17 minutes for the walkout beginning at 10 a.m. - the faculty room where the principal will host them, or outside during the 10 a.m. recess. There will be teachers on duty to listen to them. Teachers will not initiate discussions about the matter with students who remain in class.

Highland High School: Students plan to walk out on to the football field for 17 minutes as a tribute to the 14 students and three faculty members who died in Florida. There will be short speeches made by students.

Highland Park Elementary School: We have decided to focus on 17 minutes of making a difference. Students in each class will choose how they want to make a difference. It varies by grade level.

Hillside Middle School: We have planned a week of kindness activities.

-- Innovations High School: 17-minute walk out planned.

Mary Jackson Elementary: Assembly and 17 seconds of silence.

Nibley Park School: Each grade level (K-8) will be doing an Act of Kindness. This includes writing letters/notes and other activities on campus.

Northwest Middle School: Students are creating wishes for peace on large slips of paper and adjoining a chain with their class. We will all observe a moment of silence for those who were affected in Florida, and the school will walk out together and form a Peace Chain around our school with our class peace chains.

Open Classroom: Some students are planning on going outside the school but staying on school grounds. Others are planning on doing 17 positive actions and talking about school safety.

SLCSE: At 10 a.m. students who wish to walk out can go to the gym or the backfield. There will be tables set up for information on how to get involved and preregister to vote. Teachers will buddy up so that those who walk out have an escort and those who choose to stay are supervised. There will be two minutes of silence at 10:15 until 10:17 a.m.

SLSPA: School will be conducted as usual, however, the school will provide buses for students who would like to participate in the walkout with Highland High School. The buses will provide SPA students a safe passage to Highland at 9:55 a.m. for the 10 a.m. event for 17 minutes of school safety protest or observance of silence. At 10:19 the buses will load and return the students safely to SPA classes by 10:25.

Uintah Elementary School: 17 acts of kindness, as suggested by the superintendent.

Wasatch Elementary School: Classes are working with their reading buddies or another classroom to create posters that highlight 17 ways to show kindness and help others feel safe at school. These posters will be displayed along the south side of our school.

West High School: Students will quietly enter the football stadium and will say a few words. Then 17 minutes will be dedicated for the lives lost last month.
