SANDY — A Utah martial arts instructor is trying to give students the confidence to fight back if they ever face an active shooter.

Joseph Gleed runs Unified Krav Maga in Sandy, and on Sunday, he brought in Shachar Izraeli, a Krav Maga instructor from Israel to teach the class.

Izraeli, Gleed said, is one of the world's most sought-after Krav Maga instructors. Students who attended the classes would develop skills to fight back against people who were attacking with guns or knives, he said.

"It's becoming more prevalent and, with that, people want to know if there's something they can do. I think the majority of the population doesn't understand that there are things they can do whether they're carrying a weapon or not carrying a weapon and get trained on those things," Gleed said.

The students came from all different backgrounds to attend the class. Some said they had come from as far away as Atlanta. Gleed said he hoped they all took lessons home with them.

"There are things they can do, whether they're attacked one-on-one or whether it's an active-shooter or something with a knife,” he said. “There are things we can do to defend ourselves, our loved ones and other people.”
