Texas Southern beats Alabama St. 90-76 in SWAC quarterfinal

HOUSTON (AP) — Donte Clark scored 30 points, Marquis Salmon had 13 points and 13 rebounds and Texas Southern rolled to a 90-76 victory over Alabama State on Tuesday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal.

No. 3 seed Texas Southern (13-19) will face second-seeded Prairie View A&M (15-17) in a Friday semifinal.

Demontrae Jefferson added 24 points for the Tigers, who made 33 of 46 (72 percent) free throws. Derrick Bruce chipped in 12 points.

Reginald Gee scored 30 points on 12-of-21 shooting to lead sixth-seeded Alabama State (8-23). Rodney Simeon scored 13 points and Austin Rogers added 10.

Texas Southern had a one-point halftime lead, and opened the second half with a 28-12 run for a 66-49 advantage with 11 minutes left and cruised from there. Clark converted a 4-point play and scored 13 points, and Jefferson had seven points during the stretch.
