SB87, sponsored by Sen. Todd Weiler, R-Woods Cross, was approved 26-0 Friday and now goes to the House.
Weiler told a Senate committee earlier in the week that the idea for his bill came about after one of his constituents donated locks to his daughter's school. It was unclear whether school officials were allowed to use the locks. They were referred to public safety officials.
The bill would create an exemption in building and fire codes to allow schools to decide for themselves, Weiler said.
He clarified on the Senate floor Friday that his bill does not require anything of schools. It merely "removes barriers and restores local controls."
