SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Highway Patrol troopers jumped into action Tuesday night to save a woman trapped inside a crashed car that caught fire after a police chase.

A trooper began the pursuit when a silver Audi sped by at 104 mph on I-15 northbound near the border of Washington and Iron County, according to UHP Lt. Todd Royce. The trooper chased the vehicle, which reached speeds of 120 mph, for about 8 miles before ending the pursuit in Iron County. The car crashed and caught fire about 3 miles from where the chase ended.

Raw images obtained from the Utah Department of Public Safety show trooper Mike Murphy running to the car while carrying a fire extinguisher to assist. Other troopers in the area noticed the debris and rushed to the scene. Trooper Bambi Baie is also seen through the smoke running toward the vehicle to help.

A male who had been driving the car was outside of the vehicle when troopers arrived, but a woman who was wearing her seat belt was trapped inside the vehicle and unconscious. Troopers extracted the woman from the vehicle and transported the couple to a Cedar City hospital in fair condition.

Officials later learned the car was stolen from Los Angeles. The couple will face possible charges of felony evading police and possession of a stolen vehicle, Royce said.

The driver of the Audi, later identified by UHP as 23-year-old Richard S. Davis, was released from the hospital and booked into the Washington County Jail. The female passenger, 26-year-old Heather L. Haas, remained hospitalized as of Friday evening.
