YOUNG WARD, Cache County — Police have arrested a man who they say followed a woman to work, illegally kept guns in his home and left a death threat on another man's car in Box Elder County.
Michael Durand, 39, of Young Ward, was booked into Cache County Jail on Wednesday, where he was being held without bail, the Cache County Sheriff's Office said in a prepared statement on Thursday.
The sheriff's office SWAT team served a search warrant at Durand's home, where deputies found guns "and a large amount of ammunition," according to the sheriff's office.
Durand, described in the statement as a potential "threat to the community," also is suspected of affiliating with an "outlaw motorcycle gang" and of domestic violence, the sheriff's office said.
The statement offered scant details but said police managed to trail Durand one day when he followed a woman to work and also left the threatening note. A spokesman for the office did not return a message left Thursday evening.
Durand's attorney, Shannon Demler, also did not immediately respond to a message left late Thursday.
Prosecutors charged his client with nine counts of having a dangerous weapon despite being a restricted person, a third-degree felony, and stalking, a class A misdemeanor.
Additional charges stem from an incident alleged to have happened in October. Those charges are: domestic violence in the presence of a child, assault, harassment through electronics and making a violent threat — all class B misdemeanors — as well as propelling a bodily substance, a class A misdemeanor.
Officers intervened before the suspect could carry out any threat, Sheriff Chad Jensen said in the statement, adding that his deputies care about their community and "possibly prevented a real tragedy from occurring.”
