The Northeastern Counseling Center’s goal is to reduce substance use and suicide rates in Uintah, Daggett and Duchesne Counties. These counties are rural areas of Utah. Many times those suffering from a mental health crisis have a great distance to travel to obtain mental health services. The center provides Mental Health First Aid classes in an effort to educate others on the of the signs of mental illness, identify a mental health crisis, and to reduce stigma & suicide rates in the Tri-County area. The classes also identify local resources to refer someone who has mental health or substance abuse issues. They approach their work with professionalism, a variety of treatment approaches, flexibility and compassion. The Northeastern Counseling Center has been able to provide these classes to those working with veterans, law enforcement, schools, service agencies, and youth and faith leaders in these rural areas. To date, they have successfully trained more than 700 community members in Mental Health First Aid. SelectHealth recognizes the crucial resources provided by the Northeastern Counseling Center as another example of how Utah Gives Back.
