SAN JOSE, Calif. — It has been a long time since the Utah State football team has won a game on the road — 11 games to be exact. Its last true road win came on Nov. 7, 2014, at Wyoming.

That streak came to a screeching halt on Saturday night at CEFCU Stadium in San Jose. USU racked up 589 yards of total offense and jumped out to a 55-0 lead before San Jose State knew what hit it and opened conference play with a 61-10 road win.

Senior quarterback Kent Myers had four touchdowns on the night (two rushing, two passing), three different Aggie receivers recorded touchdown receptions and the USU defense held the Spartans to less than 170 yards of total offense. Here is the triple option of observations from the Aggies' dominating win.

When Myers is on, he is very good

There were many who expected or wanted redshirt freshman Jordan Love to start at quarterback on Saturday night. However, USU head coach Matt Wells stayed with Myers, despite a lackluster performance against Wake Forest a week ago.

Myers didn't let anyone down. The senior from Rowlett, Texas, ran for 84 yards and two scores and threw for 181 yards and two more scores. Myers sat out the entire fourth quarter after his 68-yard touchdown run put USU up 55-0 with four minutes left in the third quarter.

Looking at the first four games of the year for the Aggies, when Myers is good, Utah State wins. If he has an off night, the Aggies are in trouble.

In the wins against Idaho State and San Jose State, Myers has accounted for 679 yards, eight touchdowns and just two interceptions.

In losses to 9th-ranked Wisconsin and ACC foe Wake Forest, Meyers had 304 total yards of offense, no touchdowns and four interceptions.

USU needs Myers to be consistently good like he was Saturday night against San Jose State. If he is, the Aggies can win a lot of ballgames in the Mountain West Conference.

Quick start set the tone

Coming off a sub-par game against Wake Forest a week ago, it was important for USU to get off on the right foot in its conference opener.

LaJuan Hunt Jr. put the Aggies on the board first just six minutes into the game with a 29-yard scamper to the end zone, and USU was off and running.

In the second quarter, USU scored 24 points in a matter of six minutes to really put the game away.

The points kept coming in the third quarter, with two rushing touchdowns from Myers and kicker Dominik Eberle hitting a 52-yard field goal. If you blinked, you might not have realized it was 55-0 and there was still over four minutes left in the third quarter.

Tune-up for BYU complete

Conference weekend is coming up for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and that means one thing: Utah State and BYU will get together for the Battle of the Old Wagon Wheel on Friday night.

USU needed a game like Saturday night to get things in order as it prepares to take on the Cougars. Confidence is a big thing with this Aggie team, and scoring 61 points, snapping an 11-game road losing streak and starting out the Mountain West Conference season with a 1-0 record is huge.

Plus the USU defense was dominant in the win. The Aggies allowed just 10 first downs, 162 total yards of offense and forced five turnovers.

The last time the Aggies won a conference opener by a wide margin came in 2015 when they beat Fresno State 56-14 on Oct. 10. USU followed that win with a 52-26 win over Boise State. Which USU team will show up at Maverik Stadium on Friday night? The one that has dominated Idaho State and San Jose State or the one that struggled against Power 5 conference opponents?
