An accidental call led to two construction workers being arrested for scrap metal theft at the state Capitol.
The suspects were working for Utah Correctional Industries, which supervised prisoners during the Capitol renovations.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports the company agreed to put all recyclables from the reconstruction in bins for redemption, and the proceeds would be credited to the contract.
Two construction supervisors allegedly were talking about the money they'd made from scrapping out copper wire and other recyclables when one suspect's cell phone inadvertently dialed a Department of Corrections voicemail that recorded the whole conversation.
Court documents show the workers got $2,000.
Yesterday the supervisors and a security guard were charged with misuse of public money, or, in the alternative, failure to keep or pay public money.
