IVINS, Washington County — A registered sex offender with multiple warrants for his arrest in Oregon was apprehended Monday morning after he had been living in Utah for the past several months, police said.

Robert Scott Freier, 48, was arrested shortly after 10 a.m. Monday. He was charged in 5th District Court Tuesday morning for failing to register as a sex offender, a third-degree felony.

Santa Clara-Ivins police had been tipped off by the Medford (Oregon) Police Department that Freier had misdemeanor and felony warrants out for his arrest and may be living in the Ivins area, Santa Clara-Ivins police officer Randy Hancey said.

Hancey said he did not know what those warrants were for, and a call placed to Medford police Tuesday was not immediately returned.

Freier had been “permanently living at a residence and had not registered with local police department as a sex offender,” according to a jail report, which led to the felony charge. Hancey said authorities believe Freier had been living in the Ivins area for about six to eight months.

Officers knew where Freier was because they had visited the home he had been living in for minor incidents at the residence over the past few months, Hancey said.

“They weren’t aware who he was at the time. But once we received information this could possibly be him, we were all over it to track him down,” Hancey said.

Court records show Freier has no previous arrests in Utah. According to a Medford sex offender registry list, Freier was convicted of burglary and public indecency in 2006, as well as another public indecency charge in 2012.

He was also convicted in California of attempted rape in 1991, which is when he was required to register as a sex offender, according to a 2006 Medford Mail Tribune article.
