PROVO — Criminal charges were filed Wednesday against a part-time firefighter accused of breaking into a fire station multiple times to steal narcotics.
Brenden James Ivie, 21, of Pleasant Grove, is charged in 4th District Court with four counts of burglary, a second-degree felony; four counts of theft, a class B misdemeanor; attempted burglary, a third-degree felony; two counts of drug possession, a class A misdemeanor; and two counts of drug possession, a class B misdemeanor.
Ivie is a part-time firefighter for the Unified Fire Authority and has interned for several agencies in Utah County, including the Pleasant Grove Fire Department.
On four occasions — June 10, July 26, Aug. 4 and Aug. 5 — Ivie broke into the Pleasant Grove Fire Department, got into the ambulance and took boxes that contain narcotics for medical use, such as fentanyl, diazepam, ketamine, morphine and midazolam, according to charging documents.
After those incidents, a surveillance camera was installed. On Sunday, police say Ivie pulled up to the fire station again to attempt to burglarize the department a fifth time, and the third time in three days, but was caught after attempting to enter through a window he had broken the night before.
When he was arrested, Ivie had an IV catheter port line already fixed on his arm and inserted into a vein, a police affidavit states.
Detectives found the previously stolen drug boxes when they searched Ivie's car and residence, according to charging documents.
Unified Fire Authority officials on Monday said Ivie has been with the department since January, but "has since been removed from all future work schedules" in light of his arrest.
