A small gizmo carried on Ogden paramedics' bags may have stopped a bad situation from getting worse in a carbon monoxide poisoning.

That gizmo is a small alarm that sounds when it detects dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

One went off last night when crews responded to what was originally reported as a diabetic problem at a local business.

"It changed the incident commander's total mindset regarding how he was approaching that whole entire environment," said Ogden Fire Chief Mike Mathieu.

Mathieu says five people were eventually treated for carbon monoxide poisoning. The alarm, though, was able to keep firefighters out of a dangerous situation.

The alarms were installed after two Ogden police officers and a paramedic were sickened in a carbon monoxide incident in 2006.
