SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is endorsing Tanner Ainge in the primary election to replace Jason Chaffetz in Congress.

Ainge, a consulting firm owner and son of Boston Celtics general manager Danny Ainge, announced the former Alaska governor's endorsement Thursday.

Palin says in a statement that Ainge isn't a career politician, supports states' rights and will focus on cutting government spending.

Palin's endorsement follows other high-profile politicians who have weighed in on the GOP race for Utah's 3rd Congressional District.

Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz endorsed former Utah state legislator Chris Herrod and Utah's GOP Gov. Gary Herbert endorsed Provo Mayor John Curtis.

Ainge, Herrod and Curtis face off in an Aug. 15 primary election. The winner will face Democratic physician Kathie Allen in November's special election, along with several third-party and unaffiliated candidates.
