WASHINGTON (AP) -- Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch called Sen. Ted Stevens a hero, a legend and one of the Senate's greatest minds during testimony at the Alaska senator's corruption trial.
Stevens is fighting charges he tried to hide more than $250,000 in home renovations and other gifts from an oil services and construction company.
But Hatch on Tuesday called Stevens "one of the strongest, toughest, best, most decent people I've known in the U.S. Senate." He said that along with Hawaii Sen. Daniel Inouye, Stevens is a "legend in the U.S. Senate."
Hatch, a Republican, called Stevens one of the Senate's greatest minds, along with Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy. Hatch testified that he didn't know the details of the corruption case against Stevens.
