STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald isn't mourning the death of two-a-day practices, even if it means an earlier start to preseason practice. The Bulldogs opened preseason camp with several days left in July, which is much earlier than in previous years. One major reason for the early start is a new NCAA rule limiting teams to just one contact practice per day.

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi's new football coach, Matt Luke, says he now has his dream job, even if it comes during very difficult circumstances. The 40-year-old has been named the team's interim head coach for the 2017 after Hugh Freeze resigned in disgrace last week because of personal misconduct.

CHICAGO (AP) — Ohio State coach Urban Meyer doesn't just believe the Big Ten has closed the gap with the more heralded Southeastern Conference. He is convinced the race is a dead heat already. The SEC dominated the Big Ten the last two seasons, when it won six of the eight meetings between them. Meyer says he no longer sees disrespect for the Big Ten when it comes to recruiting.
