SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz is planning to headline a campaign rally to support a former Utah state legislator who is vying to replace Jason Chaffetz in Congress.

Chris Herrod's campaign announced Monday that Cruz will appear alongside Herrod at a rally Saturday in Lehi. Herrod was selected by about 800 members of Utah's GOP last month as their preferred candidate during a state convention.

Herrod will compete in the Aug. 15 primary against John Curtis, the popular mayor of Provo, and Tanner Ainge, a consulting firm owner and son of Boston Celtics general manager Danny Ainge.

The winner will face Democratic physician Kathie Allen in November.

Chaffetz resigned at the end of last month less than halfway through his new term, citing the desire to spend more time with his family.
