SOUTHPORT, England — Tony Finau’s stay at the Open Championship lives on through the weekend for the fifth time in his 11-year pro golf career.
After shooting even-par 70 in Thursday’s opening round, the Lehi resident put together a 3-over 73 Friday to make the cut at Royal Birkdale golf club in England.
Finau balanced two birdies with three bogeys at the British Open. A double bogey on the par-4 ninth hole put him on the No. 35 spot on the leaderboard Friday, one stroke ahead of the cut line.
Jordan Spieth leads the field at 6-under 134 after shooting in the 60s in both opening rounds. Matt Kuchar is second at 4-under 136, one shot ahead of Ian Poulter and U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka.
Moving day resumes early Friday morning, with Finau teeing off at 5:15 p.m. MT alongside fellow American J.B. Holmes.
