HEBER CITY — Authorities are investigating what they say may have been an accidental shooting near a gun range early Saturday afternoon.
At about noon, the Wasatch County dispatch center received a call from a 13-year-old girl who said her father had accidentally been shot in the stomach, said Wasatch County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Jared Rigby. The pair were reportedly practice shooting off of a dirt road south of Big Hollow Gun Range when the man was shot, Rigby said.
The man drove himself to the gun range to meet an ambulance. He was taken to Heber Valley Medical Center and later flown to a hospital in Salt Lake. Officials were unsure of the man’s condition but said he was conscious, breathing and alert when first responders arrived at the gun range.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
“It’s been reported to us that it was an accidental shooting and we’ll confirm that and rule out any other possibilities,” Rigby said.
Officials said the man was shot by a .22-caliber gun but were unsure if it was a rifle or a pistol.
