PROVO — An Orem man died after the car he was driving collided with another vehicle in Provo Canyon Thursday night, Utah Highway Patrol said.
Emergency crews responded to a report of a crash on state Route 189 in the canyon shortly after 7:45 p.m., officials said. Troopers said Jared Kidrick, 26, was driving a gold 1995 Nissan in the westbound lane and attempted to pass traffic on the right shoulder when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed the westbound lanes and struck the median barrier.
A white Hyundai Santa Fe traveling in the eastbound lane collided with the Nissan as Kidrick’s vehicle stretched over into the eastbound lane, authorities said.
Kidrick was pronounced dead at the scene. Two people inside the Hyundai were transported to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and two others suffered minor injuries, according to UHP.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but troopers said speed and improper passing are believed to be factors in the crash.
