BRIGHTON — A hiker is in serious but stable condition after falling 80 feet in Big Cottonwood Canyon Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Emergency crews responded to a report of a fall in the Twin Lakes area of the canyon shortly after noon, according to Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke.

Lohrke said the hiker, a 37-year-old man, suffered a severe leg injury in the fall. The man was able to call his wife who called police about the fall.

A medical helicopter was able to locate the man about an hour later, and he was flown off the mountain to a local hospital at approximately 2:30 p.m., Lohrke said.
