DRAPER — A Walmart market was evacuated Friday due to a gas leak, officials reported.
Construction crews drilling near 12300 South and 1300 East accidentally struck a natural gas line near the shopping center about 3:45 p.m., said Unified Fire Authority spokesman Matthew McFarland.
Nearby retailers Cactus & Tropicals and Wadsworth Brothers Construction building were also evacuated as a precaution.
The heavier-than-air gas pooled into storm drains, McFarland said, and crews were checking the drains to ensure clean-up crews know the perimeter of the gas runoff.
Crews were waiting on the gas company to arrive to suppress the leak and make sure the gas dissipated.
