Jed Boal Reporting A three-alarm fire this morning ripped through a Cache County home for the second time in eight months. It's a tough blow for the family who planned to move back into the home soon. Firefighters are zeroing in on a possible electrical problem as the cause of this fire.
Sixty firefighters from more than ten departments battled the flames at the Hyde Park home which the owner was remodeling. When firefighters got to the home at 7:30, flames were spreading quickly through the attic.
Chief Jay Downs, Smithfield Fire Department: "We arrived on scene, fire crews were planning to enter the building, when there was an explosion, and two firefighters were injured at that time."
One of them was burned on his hands and face and is being treated at the hospital. The other was released.
Firefighters still search for the cause of the fire and that explosion, but focus in an area above the garage. The family was living elsewhere while they remodeled the home after an earlier fire.
Nora Peterson, Daughter of Homeowner: "For us it's really shocking because this happened nine months ago. they were preparing to move in next week."
Last year, five days before Christmas, a newly adopted child from Russia was playing with matches and started a fire in the basement. It left the home with severe smoke and water damage. Firefighters say the family was remodeling and living elsewhere, so no one was in the home this morning.
Nora Peterson, Daughter of Homeowner: "To have this is a major setback. No one was hurt, but emotionally, our mom is really upset."
Firefighters hope to pin down the cause soon.
