Doug Miller was one of a kind.
His death earlier this week after a brief, sudden illness at the age of 59 leaves all of his friends and colleagues here at KSL where he worked for more than two-decades, as well as his associates at KUTV where he has been the last five years, feeling a deep sense of loss.
Doug will be foremost remembered as Utah's Mister Outdoors. His unique style, booming voice and story-telling talent allowed thousands of viewers each week to vicariously enjoy outdoor adventures most could only dream of.
Yet, Doug was much more than an outdoorsman.
He was a world-class journalist who first honed his extraordinary skills in his home state of Arkansas before joining the KSL team in 1977 as a radio news anchor. Soon, he became the station's news director and helped build NewsRadio 1160 into the news force it is today. In the mid-eighties, Doug made the transition to television where he eventually developed his appealing outdoor persona.
Those of us here at KSL, as well as many of you, will miss his unforgettable Arkansas drawl, and his many homespun sayings and phrases. We have to imagine he is already seeking high-adventure and an audience to share it with in the realms beyond.
