BYU and Utah will launch the 2008-09 season of the Deseret First Duel on Saturday when the two square off in a women's soccer match at 7 p.m. at Ute Soccer Field.
Six points and a Deseret First Duel trophy will go to the winner of the match as the Cougars and Utes will battle for the winning share of the 65½ points to be awarded through April 2009 in the 12 sports in which the two universities compete against each other. They include women's soccer, women's volleyball, football, women's gymnastics, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's swimming, softball, and baseball.
The Deseret First Duel was organized last year by BYU, the University of Utah, and Deseret First Credit Union as a way to formalize the athletic rivalry between the two schools. BYU won the 2007-08 Deseret First Duel championship.
