SALT LAKE CITY — U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke began his tour of Bears Ears National Monument Monday after President Donald Trump signed an executive order calling for the review of all national monuments designated over the last 21 years.
President Trump singled out Bears Ears and vowed to end the "abuses" of the Antiquities Act, which allows the President of the United States to create national monuments from federal lands in order to protect significant natural, cultural or scientific features.
Signed into law in 1906 by former Republican President Theodore Roosevelt, U.S. presidents have used the Antiquities Act to create 157 national monuments since then, 13 of which have been in Utah:
