EDEN, Utah (AP) -- A horse had to be euthanized because of complications from West Nile virus, prompting health officials to renew a warning that mosquitoes are staying active.
The horse, from the Ogden valley town of Eden, was put down, the Weber-Morgan Health Department reported Tuesday. State and local health officials were searching their records to determine when the horse was put down.
A state veterinarian, Dr. Wyatt Frampton, said West Nile has infected seven Utah horses so far this year, and four died or had to be put down because they couldn't stand on their feet. Frampton said the number infected is down in recent years.
In a statement, Weber-Morgan health chief Gary House warned Tuesday, "This is not the time to become complacent or let our guard down in terms of protecting ourselves from this debilitating virus."
