WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch is promising to be independent if confirmed to the high court. In his opening statement to the Senate Judiciary Committee today, President Donald Trump's nominee said it is for Congress to make laws, for the executive to enforce them, "and for neutral and independent judges" to apply them. He said that in his decade as a federal appeals court judge he tried to treat all fairly and with respect.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has welcomed Iraq's prime minister to the White House for their first meeting since Trump assumed office. The visit comes as Trump prepares to host a 68-nation meeting geared toward advancing the fight against the Islamic State group. But the extent of Trump's commitment to helping war-torn Iraq remains to be seen amid significant proposed budget cuts for the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is deploying an outside and inside strategy to fulfill his campaign promise to repeal and replace "Obamacare." He's seeking support beyond Washington before making an in-person pitch on Capitol Hill. Trump is slated to rally supporters tonight in Louisville, Kentucky, alongside Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell after meetings and phone calls in Washington aimed at steadying the troubled legislation. He plans to court House Republicans tomorrow.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Florida's governor says he had the authority to remove a top prosecutor in Orlando from the case of a slain police officer after she said her office would no longer seek the death penalty in any cases. Rick Scott said today that he is comfortable with his decision last week to remove the Markeith Loyd case from State Attorney Aramis Ayala's office and transfer it to a State Attorney's Office in a neighboring district. Ayala asserted in a legal motion today that Scott overstepped his authority.
NEW YORK (AP) — Bill and Hillary Clinton say David Rockefeller was a "kind, good man" who used his fame and fortune to do good in the United States and abroad. They say his tremendous support of arts and humanities in America gave millions the opportunity to experience the country's great heritage of painting, dance, music and more. A spokesman says Rockefeller died in his sleep this morning at his home in Pocantico (poh-KAN'-tih-koh) Hills, New York. He was 101.
