BEIRUT (AP) — A group linked to al-Qaida has claimed responsibility for yesterday's twin explosions in the Syrian capital that killed at least 40 people and wounded more than 100. The blasts occurred near holy shrines frequented by Shiites. The al-Qaida-linked group says the blasts were a message to Iran, a main backer of Syrian President Bashar Assad. Most of the victims were Iraqis.
ROME (AP) — A Tunisian man has been expelled from Italy for alleged links to the suspected Berlin Christmas market attacker. The Italian interior ministry says the man was put on a flight to Tunis. It says he was a supporter of the Islamic State group who lived south of Rome and associated with "radical" companions who opposed the moderate imam at the local mosque. The Tunisian man suspected of carrying out the truck attack in Berlin was killed in a shootout with Italian police near Milan in December.
ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkey's president is calling on international organizations to "raise their voices" against the Netherlands and impose sanctions, after two Turkish government officials were prevented from campaigning in the country. At a campaign rally before a referendum on expanding the powers' of his office, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan (REH'-jehp TY'-ihp UR'-doh-wahn) said the Netherlands would be "made to pay" for its treatment of the Turkish officials.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio police say three teens have been shot, one fatally, during a large fight at a "Sweet 16" birthday party in Columbus. Investigators say 18-year-old Tyquan Lackey died at the hospital following the shooting last night. Two juveniles were being treated at Ohio State University's main hospital. Police say the shooting appears to have been gang related with dozens of gang members attending the party.
NEWTON, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey man who sparked a nationwide search when he fled the state with his two young sons has pleaded guilty to two counts of interference of custody. Sussex County prosecutors say Kristopher Dohm faces up to 20 years in prison when he's sentenced April 21. Dohm had told his ex-wife that he was taking their sons, then 7 and 8, on a trip to Nevada. She reported them missing when they failed to return. They were found a few weeks later at a motel in Florida, along with a fugitive wanted in Tennessee on sex charges.
