South Dakota beats Western Illinois 78-69 in overtime

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Matt Mooney scored 24 points and Tyler Flack added 19, including the go-ahead 3-point play in overtime, to lead No. 1 seed South Dakota to a 78-69 win over eighth-seeded Western Illinois in the Summit League Tournament quarterfinal on Saturday.

Flack got the opening bucket of the extra period and converted the free throw after being fouled to put South Dakota on top for good, 71-68 with 4:27 to play.

Western Illinois, which forced overtime with a 3-pointer from C.J. Duff at the end of regulation, was held to a single free throw in the extra period, missing all nine of its shots over the final five minutes as South Dakota steadily pulled away.

Trey Dickerson had 10 points for South Dakota (22-10), which will play either No. 4 seed South Dakota State or fifth-seeded Denver on Monday.

Garret Covington led Western Illinois (8-20) with 25 points, Duff finished with 12 and Brandon Gilbeck had 11 plus five blocks to set a single-season school record of 85.
