ROLESVILLE, N.C. (AP) — The male North Carolina police officer captured on video slamming a female high school student to the floor has resigned.

The town of Rolesville released a statement on Friday saying officer Ruben De Los Santos submitted his letter of resignation Thursday.

According to the student who posted the video, the student thrown to the ground at Rolesville High School in early January was trying to break up a fight involving her sister.

The video Ahunna Akpuda recorded showed De Los Santos lifting and dropping a girl on her left side, then pulling her to her feet and leading her away.

Akpuda said two girls had been fighting, including the sister of the girl who was slammed to the floor.

De Los Santos was initially placed on paid administrative leave.
