CEDAR CITY — Division of Wildlife Resources officers are seeking information after two buck deer were illegally killed.
The poaching was reported in late December after a citizen discovered two dead deer near Cedar City, the wildlife agency said. A conservation officer responded to the scene and discovered two buck deer had been skinned and field dressed and the heads had been removed. However, all of the meat had been left to waste.
The conservation officer believes the deer were killed illegally and were placed at the location sometime in early December.
Wildlife agency officials said deer are often a bigger target for poaching during the winter months because they congregate on ranges at lower elevations. As large groups of deer bunch together in search of food, they provide an enticing target for poachers.
Anyone with information about these or other poaching incidents can call the UTIP hotline at 1-800-662-3337 or email the information to toturninapoacher@utah.gov. Rewards are often available for information leading to the successful prosecution of wildlife crimes, and tipsters can remain anonymous.
