PROVO, Utah (Aug. 17, 2006)--It was another workman-like practice for BYU football as week two of Fall Camp winds down.
"Every rep our players take part helps shape and develop the new players," head coach Bronco Mendenhall said.
Mendenhall said after film review of Wednesday's scrimmage he was happy with the defensive execution.
"I thought the defensive side played with better competitive spirit," he said. "They tackled better and executed at a higher level than they have throughout Fall Camp. Now, I expect the offense will respond in the next scrimmage."
In addition to the regular position-specific drills, the team spent extra time on special teams. With the addition of new deep snapper Jayson Clark, Mendenhall was pleased with the team's performance on field goal drills.
In team drills, the defense kept the offense in check for the second consecutive day. However, the offense did move the ball well at times in the quick-whistle drill. John Beck hit Michael Reed on 29-yard pass play on the second play of the drill. The defense kept the ball in front of them and the offense was unable to get the ball in the end zone.
On the second possession, Jason Beck led the offense on its longest drive of the game. The second-team offense moved the ball 65 yards on 14 plays but the defense held the offense out of the end zone.
After a pair of three-and-out drives, the team drills ended when Robbie Buckner stepped in front of a Max Hall pass for an interception.
Tomorrow's 10 a.m. practice will be the third of four open practices. As a reminder to fans, cameras or video equipment--including cell phones--are not permitted at any future open practices.
