SALT LAKE CITY — Wednesday marks Utah's 121st birthday, as it became the 45th state on Jan. 4, 1896.
While it was mostly Native American territory prior to pioneers settling the land in 1847, Utah's journey to statehood also included being a part of Spanish and Mexican acquisition until the U.S. claimed the area through a treaty in 1848.
Utah then became a territory as a part of the Compromise of 1850 and remained such until it became a state in 1896.
