PROVO, Utah (AP) — Longtime BYU football coach LaVell Edwards has died. He led the school to national prominence and 257 wins against just 101 defeats. He coached the Cougars for 29 seasons before retiring in 2000 and they won or shared 19 conference championships and played in 22 bowl games.
DENVER (AP) — According to an autopsy report, former Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam killed himself after struggling with depression. The 42-year-old was found dead Dec. 5 in a park near the University of Colorado, where he played from 1992-1994. The report states that Salaam died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — The red-hot Columbus Blue Jackets have won their last 13 games. They are in Winnipeg tonight to face the Jets and with a win can take over first place in both the Metropolitan Division and the Eastern Conference. A year ago the Blue Jackets finished 27th overall in the NHL.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Stanley Cup champion Penguins won't have the services of goaltender Matt Murray for a while. Coach Mike Sullivan says Murray is out indefinitely with a lower-body injury and that he is listed as "week to week." Murray left last night's comeback victory over Carolina after the second period.
SEMMERING, Austria (AP) — American skier Mikaela (mih-KAY'-luh) Shiffrin won her third World Cup race in as many days today in Austria. After back-to-back giant slalom victories, she finished first in a slalom race. The victory is her 23rd in World Cup slalom racing and gives her a 215-point lead in the overall World Cup standings.
