MOSCOW (AP) — Russia's defense ministry says rescue teams have found a flight recorder from the plane that crashed into the Black Sea on Sunday. The ministry says the recorder was found a mile from the shore early Tuesday. All 92 people aboard the Russian military jet are believed to have died when it crashed two minutes after taking off from the Russian city of Sochi. The plane was headed for Syria and carried members of Russia's world-famous military choir.
CHICAGO (AP) — Thousands of homes and businesses are still without power as the northern Great Plains digs out from a winter storm. In North Dakota, the Minot International Airport was closed Monday and airports serving Fargo and Bismarck had flight cancellations. In Michigan, WOOD-TV is reporting that more than 20,000 customers were without power Monday night.
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippine coast guard is picking up the search for 18 crewmen from a cargo ship that sank at the height of Typhoon Nock-Ten. The coast guard says 14 other crewmen were rescued and one died after the ship sank near where the powerful typhoon passed Monday. At least seven people died in the storm, including the ship's crewman and villagers who drowned.
NEWPORT, Tenn. (AP) — Authorities in Tennessee have now recaptured five of the six inmates who broke out of jail on Christmas. The Cocke County Sheriff's Office says the inmates escaped from the jail early Sunday after removing a toilet from the wall and going through a hole behind it that led to the outside of the facility.
NEW YORK (AP) — Police in New York are searching for three thieves who made off with more than $1 million dollars in furs from a store on Manhattan's upscale Madison Avenue. The thieves struck on Christmas Eve, throwing a brick through the window of Dennis Basso Inc. just before 5 a.m. Store owner Dennis Basco says the thieves took several Russian sable coats.
