HONOLULU (AP) — Zylan Cheatham had 16 points and a career-high 13 rebounds to lead San Diego State over Southern Mississippi Thursday night in the Diamond Head Classic opening round.

Cheatham was 4 of 6 from the floor and made 8 of 9 free throws. Trey Kell added 11 points and five assists for the Aztecs (6-4), who have won two straight since snapping a three-game skid.

Raheem Watts had 14 points and Cortez Edwards added 13 for Southern Miss (3-7), which shot just 33 percent (19 of 57) from the field.

The Aztecs had a double-digit lead midway through the first half and led 36-20 at halftime. Southern Miss opened the second half on a 23-12 spurt, capped by Michael Ramey's 3-pointer, to pull to 48-43 with 12 minutes left but they didn't get closer.

San Diego State outrebounded Southern Miss 40-26.
