ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) — Xavier Cooks had 27 points and 10 rebounds, Joshua Davenport blocked a 3-point attempt at the buzzer and Winthrop beat Georgia Southern 86-84 on Tuesday.
Winthrop took an 85-81 lead with 56 seconds left when Keon Johnson drove through traffic and made a layup. He drew a charge on the other end, but Winthrop turned it over on their next possession and Mike Hughes sank a 3-pointer from the corner with 29.6 seconds left to make it 85-84.
Davenport made 1 of 2 free throws with 27.2 seconds left for a two-point lead. Georgia Southern wasn't able to get off a quick shot and Hughes missed long 3, but the ball was recovered in the backcourt by GSU. After a long pass to the 3-point line, Ike Smith's shot was blocked.
Johnson scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half for Winthrop (7-3). Roderick Perkins made three of the Eagles' 11 3-pointers and scored 11 points.
Smith had 26 points, six rebounds and four assists for Georgia Southern (6-6). Tookie Brown added 20 points and Hughes finished with 17.
